This 4-day Inca Trek covers 42 km through the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. The path follows original Inca stone steps built in the 15th century for pilgrims heading to the citadel.
Expect steep ascents over two passes above 4000 m and descents into cloud forests with bromeliads and ferns. Groups stay small with up to 8 hikers plus porters who carry gear on their backs using traditional woven packs. The trek ends at the Sun Gate with a view of Machu Picchu at 2430 m (7972 ft).
Porters from local Andean communities earn fair pay and receive training in safety protocols. Once a group hiker twisted an ankle near Dead Woman’s Pass; the guide used a satellite phone to call for backup while porters stabilized the injury with foam pads from the kit.
The trek starts with a bus ride along the Urubamba River valley past cornfields and eucalyptus groves. Over four days hikers cover varied terrain from river flats to alpine tundra then subtropical slopes. Porters set up camp each evening with meals cooked over gas stoves using potatoes quinoa and alpaca meat sourced from nearby farms. Guides explain site functions like storage at Sayacmarca during breaks.

However, it’s a more challenging 1.5-hour hike to the top.
This option is only possible if you have an extra day to visit Machu Picchu.
It requires a separate entrance ticket, which must be booked in advance.
Entrance times are between 9:00 – 10:00 AM.
It is not possible to hike both the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu Mountain on the same day.
You may, however, schedule a second visit to the citadel for the next day.

We highly recommend using trekking poles for the trek due to the diverse terrain, which includes stone steps, uphill and downhill sections. Trekking poles provide additional support and stability, helping to reduce strain and prevent injuries throughout the hike.
If you do not have your own poles, you can rent them from us.
Rental Price: $20 USD for the entire trek
All our trekking poles are high-quality products from Black Diamond, a trusted outdoor brand known for durable and reliable hiking gear. You can arrange the rental when booking your trek or directly at our office in Cusco.
If you prefer not to bring your own sleeping bag, you can rent one from us for the duration of the trek.
Rental Price: $20 USD for the 4-day trek
Our sleeping bags are provided by Mountain Hardware, a well-known outdoor brand specializing in high-quality and durable gear. These sleeping bags are designed for cold-weather conditions and are tested for temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F).
For added comfort during your trek, we provide foam mattresses as part of the standard package. These mattresses measure:
Mattress dimensions: 190 × 60 × 6 cm (74.8 × 23.6 × 2.4 in)
Most of our travelers find these foam mattresses comfortable enough for a good night’s rest on the Inca Trail.
If you would like extra comfort, you can add an air mattress on top of the standard foam mat.
Additional Cost: $20 USD per person

As of October 2025, Machu Picchu has maintained the circuit system introduced in mid-2024, with updates to increase daily visitor capacity to 4,500 in the regular season and 5,600 in the high season (typically June to October/November, depending on the source). This system divides visits into three main circuits with a total of 10 sub-routes, designed to manage crowds, preserve the site, and offer varied experiences from panoramic views to in-depth ruin explorations and hikes. Visitors must select a specific circuit and sub-route when purchasing tickets in advance (1-4 months recommended, especially for high-demand options like Huayna Picchu).
All routes are one-way with no backtracking or re-entry without an additional ticket. Guides are optional but recommended.
Tickets are available via official platforms like machupicchu.gob.pe or tuboleto.cultura.pe. Below is a compiled summary based on current guidelines, organized by circuit. Durations include entry to exit; some routes are seasonal (high season: approximately June 1/19 to October 15/November 2). Daily ticket allocations: Circuit 1 (~1,100), Circuit 2 (~3,050), Circuit 3 (~1,450).

The most popular and complete option, covering ~80% of the site including upper and lower sectors, temples, plazas, and classic views. Starts from upper entrance, enters via traditional gate. Ideal for first-timers. Difficulty: Average (some stairs). Year-round; advance booking: 3-4 months due to high demand. Maps show paths through key sites like Sacred Plaza and Temple of the Sun viewpoint.
Lower urban/residential areas and royal buildings, entering via lower gate or Sun Gate (for Inca Trail). No classic upper viewpoint (alternative photos from agricultural sector). Ideal for limited mobility, families, or hike add-ons. Difficulty: Easy to challenging. Year-round unless noted; advance booking: 1-3 months (higher for hikes). Maps highlight lower paths with hike branches; mandatory for standard Inca Trail (upgrades available).
